Sangudo Opportunity Development Co-operative

Financing: $2.8 million raised

Sangudo is a small rural community of 300 people that has made several equity raises to invest in local projects ranging from an abattoir to a restaurant and housing. Projects in development include renewable energy and affordable seniors housing.

“This is not for the faint of heart. It’s not easy. It takes courage,” says Ohler of starting an opportunity development co-op. “Most importantly, it takes a huge level of trust within a small group of people,” he adds. “People need a collective vision of what they want their community to look like in the future, and they must be willing to move it forward. I think we all look at this as something that’s much bigger than ourselves.”
